How did we get to a place in our society when we need to make a choice of work/life balance? Can we achieve this work/life balance or is it work all the way?
My parent’s generation worked hard and occasionally they had time for themselves, but this time came after many years of raising a family and working for our family. Therefore, the time for them was in retirement!
Today we have to work until well into our sixties, so by the time we can retire we may be too tired to enjoy the second half of our lives. And I guess this is where the statement of balance comes into play for all of us who are still working in our second half of life.
So maybe it is a good idea to create a space of work and create a space of the things that give you life. And the next question is how do we do this? One way the active this work/life balance is through a lifestyle of contemplation, as contemplation gives us a new way of seeing our lives.
For me as a person who works full-time, my contemplation is my art world, which includes my art making practice, going to art classes every Tuesday night and allowing myself to be immersed in art when ever I find the opportunity. This creativity gives my spirit time to disconnect from the busy world of doing and thinking, to a space where I can be with myself and others in a different way. My creativity gives me permission to balance my life and in that, enjoy all parts of my life which includes my work.
I will invite you with a question to explore, where is your creativity? As this will lead you to your space of contemplation.
